What is Panchlait and What is it About?

Panchlait is a movie that revolves around a small village in North India that has no electricity and lives in darkness. The villagers are simple and innocent, but also ignorant and superstitious. They have a common dream of owning a panchlait, which is a type of kerosene lamp that can light up the whole village. However, they do not know how to operate it and face many hilarious situations when they try to do so. The movie also depicts the romance between Godhan, an outcast from the village, and Munri, the daughter of the village headman.

The origin and meaning of Panchlait

The word panchlait is derived from the Hindi words panch (five) and lait (light). It refers to a petromax lamp that has five mantles or wicks that produce bright light. The panchlait was a popular device in rural India before the advent of electricity. It was considered a symbol of prestige and prosperity for the villagers who could afford it. The panchlait also plays an important role in the original story by Renu, which was published in 1954 as part of his collection Teesri Kasam.

The plot and theme of Panchlait

The movie follows the story of Godhan, a young man who belongs to the Mahato community of the village. He is ostracized by the villagers after he refuses to share his inheritance with them and is accused of singing vulgar songs for Munri. He lives alone in a hut outside the village and earns his living by selling milk. He is also the only person who knows how to light a panchlait, as he had learned it from his father.

One day, the villagers manage to buy a panchlait from a fair, but they are clueless about how to use it. They try various methods to light it up, but fail miserably. They also believe that the panchlait has some magical powers and can grant their wishes. They decide to celebrate the arrival of the panchlait by organizing a feast and inviting all the neighboring villages. However, they realize that they need Godhan's help to light up the panchlait.

The village headman, Naginaa Mahto, decides to forgive Godhan and invites him to join the feast. Godhan agrees to come, but only on one condition: he wants to marry Munri, who also loves him secretly. Naginaa Mahto agrees to this proposal, but faces opposition from his wife Kaneli, who wants Munri to marry her brother's son Deewan. Meanwhile, Godhan faces trouble from Mulgain b70169992d
